Street Lights

There are over 7,500 street lights along Carson public streets. The primary purpose of street lighting is to produce safe and comfortable vision during the night on public streets and sidewalks. The benefits of such lighting include reduction of accidents, facilitation of traffic flow, promotion of nighttime operation of businesses and industries, enhanced neighborhoods and increased personal safety and security for the public.

About 80 percent of the street lights in Carson are owned and/or maintained by Southern California Edison (SCE). These are usually identified as streets lights mounted on wooden poles, and/or street lights that are located on sidewalks and/or street lights located in residential neighborhoods. If you notice a SCE street light that is broken, dark, or cycling on and off, you can call Southern California Edison at 1-800-611-1911 for repairs. When reporting a street light problem to SCE you must have a specific address and a pole number for the street light that is out.

Street lights that are located within center medians, on bridges, safety lights mounted above the traffic signal lights, and Illuminated street name signs are owned and maintained by the City of Carson.  If you notice a City-owned street light that is broken, dark, or cycling on and off, you can contact the Traffic Engineering Section at (310) 952-1700 ext. 1312 or fill out a service request form. You must have a specific address for the street light that is out.
